The fasteners used to hold the parts together are carriage bolts with a square shoulder to prevent them from rotating in the bore. I really wanted this to work but am sending it back. I've had a Swagman roof rack before, but raising and lowering my mountain bike on my SUV is too heavy for me. Like many cyclists, I love riding country roads and I need something stable and it isn't. As others have pointed out, you will have problems with metal carriers scratching your bike. Keep your distance. The company sent me my rack but it was missing a very important piece of square metal tubing. The rack was supposed to hold two bikes, but now it's just one bike. I emailed the company on Saturday and they pretty much get me going. I sent them photos of the missing main support part and their solution was I went and bought what I needed to fix the problem.
