I bought this to replace an Ikea chair I bought about 10 years ago. I assumed I would get the same. It's not and I'm disappointed. It is very light which I think may be an advantage for some but I need the weight of the earlier version due to the way I use the stool. Wooden stools are usually expensive, but not this one. The reason for this is simple: it is untreated raw wood. No problem. It can be used in different designs. I used Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil because it's easy to apply (with a tissue) and doesn't drip. You will need multiple coats with drying and light sanding in between to achieve a nice shine.
