It's a belt tensioner and it works perfectly.

I installed this Gates belt tensioner on my 2005 Dodge Durango Limited 5.7. I thought the stock tensioner was defective since the SUV has 130,000 miles, but it turns out that either the pulley or the A/C compressor was making noise. This tensioner works well and the Durango hasn't had any issues in the past few months.

Is it or not? in Engine Parts

Received the part today. It is advertised as a Gates brand belt tensioner but was packaged in a plain white box (no part number, brand, logo, barcode). The only marking on the part is "Made in Canada". It's most likely really part of the Gates brand, but the plain white box is a bit annoying. For this reason I gave only three stars.

looks like it might even be OEM

2005 Dodge Durango 5.7L, 72k per engine, 12k per new belt. There was an occasional rumble or thump, and he attributed it to the idler pulley. I saw the original was idling, I decided it was touching one of the stops. Got this one, looks like it's even an OEM. Made in Canada as mentioned by others. Same belt, everything better, no more cracking when idling. I've heard of people having trouble swapping out belts causing the same thing if they aren't exactly the same length as the OEM. So be aware
