Fairytale castle for apartments

I bought this bolt for the apartments I manage. They are amazing. Tenants love them. If you don't know the codes, you can still use your key and only have to press the "close" button when leaving and then open the door with your key. Believe it or not, some people just don't know how to use codes, no matter how simple they are. And some people don't trust them. I bought the Wi-Fi version for my house so I can control my security remotely. However, the Kwikset 909 is absolutely perfect for…

Good when it works, not so reliable

Update 2 years later: 2 stars added again. The second iteration has much better battery life and consumes very little battery. The device opens and closes reliably every time for 2 years. Initial Rating: 2 stars removed due to poor reliability. This is my second (first bought from Home Depot). The first only lasted a few years before the keyboard gave up. I noticed slight differences between the new one and the previous one; I hope kwikset improved the reliability. In terms of performance, I…

Pros
  • Test for one year
Cons

For this lock to work on the left side door, you must turn the knob vigorously until it clicks and rotates in the opposite direction. This isn't described in the instructions and I had to call support for directions. However, I like not having to hunt for keys and not worry about getting blocked. Best of all, you can give anyone you need to let into your home a code or create a temporary code and change or re-enter the code instantly. Kwikset even makes a padlock that can be customized to fit…

Stop signaling me.

I absolutely hate this item and I regret the purchase. Everything you do beeps, and when you turn off the sound and it needs to be reprogrammed immediately, you have no idea what you're doing. I bought this lock hoping to replace my old house key but it's not the right type. Please note that your key must be KW1 type for Smart Key Rekey feature. It's probably in the item description and I missed it, but my old key doesn't have any identifying marks to tell what type it is and I didn't feel like

Cannot be installed in a steel or fiberglass door as sold.

I installed it on a steel exterior door and found that the latch assembly could not be modified on site for paneled doors. You must purchase a latch designed for flush mounting. Kwikset doesn't even list the part number in the installation guide. I couldn't find this part at Lowe's or Home Depot, but I did find it on Revain.com. It's a real disappointment that I had to shell out another $21 for this part. Every other set of locks I've installed in the last 40 years includes a deadbolt assembly…

A cumbersome piece of junk that only looks good on my door

I bought this lock in July and 3 months later gave it a rave review. A month after the enthusiastic review, our 4 month old lock started to fail. I changed the batteries and it went downhill from there. This lock kept beeping. Sometimes 15 times in a row, sometimes 25 times in a row, sometimes 10 times. Do you understand. With each series of beeps, I went through the troubleshooting guide and did what it said, but to no avail. I called Kwikset and they said to do a factor reset and then reset…

Quality, Backlight, Status LED, Auto Lock Option, Security Block

Significantly improved over our previous combo latch. (See photo) The footprint is smaller so I had to sand and repaint the area prior to installation but I like this unit. The backlit keyboard is a great feature. It only lights up when you press the lock button first. So if you don't press the backlit keyboard, the battery won't drain. There's even an LED that shows the status of the lock in the house. green = unlocked; red = blocked. There is no need to memorize the position of the handle or…
