Awesome!: Crafts & Hobbies

I love this book and the 'read clean' level which means I found it easy to read and understand. After too many misdirections shopping at LYS and after my solo qualifying trips ended in disaster, this book piqued my interest. I feel like doing the course and expanding my yarn knowledge a lot. Thanks to the author!

  • Looking forward to

There is a lot of information but I would like more.

I liked the book and the way it was organized (The Big Three, Fiber Content, Yarn Structure, Visual Effects, Classification, Substitution Process, Selection and Practice Patterns) but I couldn't help but love it See the Fiber Content and Other Fiber Types section for more information. I ended up ordering Book of Yarn hoping I would get what I wanted. (Details on yarn fibers, pros and cons, and the features they excel at.) I'm still waiting for the new book to come out, but this was a really…

A small percentage actually replaces

This book is mostly about yarn. Types, qualities, sizes and so on. A very small section is dedicated to the actual yarn replacement. I admit that the information about yarn is interesting, but there are books about yarn. I bought it as a spare. Maybe she should have called it All About Yarn: Types, Uses and Substitutions. When you get to the actual replacements section, I'm left with a less than enthusiastic read. For projects. This is intended to be a hands-on compilation lesson. Instead, she…

Pros
  • Large selection

A must have for serious knitters

This great book will tell you how yarn is made, what it is made of and how to make the right decisions about whether the yarn you want to use will give you the result you want.. .You expect when it turns into clothes. The prose is well written, there are plenty of pictures to illustrate the author's point of view, and I'm pretty sure I immediately saved money when I realized the yarn I wanted to use for my summer knitting project , which would trigger knitting . Catastrophe. Instead, I learned…

A great resource for knitters of all levels!

Detailed, clearly written book on the complex topic of yarn substitutes for knitters. We live in a world with seemingly endless access to knitting patterns and yarns, but this makes it really difficult to choose the right yarn for our next project. Carol Sulkosky's new book goes into detail about yarn structure, fiber content and appearance (color) to introduce the reader to yarn in general, and then provides a series of simple but attractive drawings that she uses to suggest specific yarn…

THREE STARS PLUS

I had high hopes for this book, which took my early research to a lower level. It contains a lot of information for which I am sincerely grateful and very happy. However, there is room for improvement in the book. First, the cover features many different threads (inclusive) with no branding or anything EXCEPT for a section that contains patterns for several different garments. Most of these threads are unusual and beautiful; I would like to know more. In the patterns section, the patterns…

Pros
  • Sturdy construction

  • Not automatic

This book lives up to its title

In Carol J. Sulkosky's seventh book, she brings her vast knowledge of yarn and yarn behavior to the subject of choosing yarns not specified in the template. In the first section, Yarn Basics, she tackles big topics that entire books have been written about and highlights what you need to know about yarn behavior, content, weight, construction and the visual effects of dyeing. The second section will help you choose a substitute yarn for a pattern based on the characteristics of the yarn…
