Got a new thermometer without returning the old one (thanks Prime!). This one works better. It has about 3 degrees of dispersion, which is about what I expected. I mean it's 10 dollars. Make sure the spring isn't 'stuck' - you may need to tap the end of the spool to make sure everything slides smoothly. I ordered two of these from Revain in mid-May, both were free. I've tested them on 2 thermometers that I know are accurate. One was absolutely accurate, the other about 2 degrees off (reason for the deduction of 1 star).
