So far so good for belts

A week has passed and a few changes. My water pump was leaking and my buddy replaced it along with the whole kit. I took my family and I in a 2001 Acura MDX with 212,000 miles from MD to FL, 15 hours there and 15 hours back, over 2,000 miles. And we're back. giggle

Pros
  • Practical thing
Cons
  • Negative available

The water pump is out of order! in belts, hoses and pulleys

Bought and installed this kit in Summer '17. Had leakage issues since it was installed by my mechanic. Finally, after 6 months, it became clear what was leaking out of the water pump drain holes. Had to pay for a new water pump and labor to install it. It's too late to return.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Expensive

Well made professional kit, I expect it to last.

I am a firm believer in life that 'you get what you pay for' and that is why I have selected a reputable auto parts manufacturer for these vital engine components. Don't take El Chipo. This kit came well packaged with no installation problems and included the often forgotten maintenance sticker for future reference.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Not bad

Defective tensioner - poor quality

Both Gates tensioners used in this kit failed once the engine reached operating temperature. One came in kit, the other bought locally with the same result. I am enclosing a report from the workshop on the replacement of the second failed tensioner with another manufacturer. These are cheap Chinese tensioners. Tensioner failure caused my engine to jump in time and possibly damaged it permanently. This could damage your engine.

Good timing belt kit

Good timing belt and water pump replacement kit. I've made several timing belts over the years but the Honda 3.5 is very easy to make and this kit only makes it easier. All required parts in one set. When installing this kit I also took the opportunity to replace the radiator hoses, thermostat, drive belts and flush the coolant. I did this work a year and a half ago and everything is still going smoothly. I will be buying this kit again when my wife's pilot is over 300k (hopefully).

Pros
  • Easy installation
Cons
  • Useless features

Excellent quality. basically

I have a lot of experience with Gates products, especially timing belts. This is perfect for the 2004 Honda Pilot. The belt is of great quality and the hydraulic tensioner was actually part of the OEM from Aisin (see photo). We also have excellent quality idlers and tensioners. The water pump was somewhat missing though, a gasket is included but you will need a small amount of gasket maker or sealant to ensure the gasket stays in place when fitted. Overall I'm very happy with the set and I'mโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • Vulgarity

Timing belt too wide

I have a 2007 Honda Pilot EXL with a J35AD (VTEC) engine. The 2007 pilots used two models of the VTEC engine. I never knew what the difference between the engines was. Now I seem to know one of them. I bought this kit from Revain because I knew it was right for my pilot. My son and I removed all of the parts from the front of the engine and installed new bearings and a water pump. The last part to be installed is the toothed belt. After working on it for an hour, we found that the belt in thisโ€ฆ
