Best Buy for Security

This is one of the best buys I've ever made. We have lived in our house for about 9 years. There was a regular fire alarm right next to our kitchen. The alarm constantly detects cooking smoke and steam. This means that every fire alarm in the house will go off. We should have turned on the alarm or tried to hit the reset button. Let me just say that I was very angry and upset that the builders of our home placed an alarm like this so close to the kitchen. I replaced it with this alarm clock…

Unexpected Electrocution

There is no indication that the detector worked. You have no idea what's wrong with the Kidde system. I really need an indicator of recent activation. When replacing the batteries, DO NOT touch the unplugged power plug, it is highly charged and may give you an electric shock. After disconnecting, you must unload the device. I dropped mine after an unexpected bump while changing the battery, which is on the bottom and requires the unit to be removed and unplugged. When replacing the battery, do…

Hassle-free exchange.

When we first moved into our new home 10 years ago, we had constant problems with the smoke detector closest to the kitchen so I replaced it with this compatible heat detector. It was time to replace all the sensors so I decided to replace them with the same brands as I had 10 years of service in total. This family of Kidde alarms are direct replacements. I was lucky that I didn't have to change the pigtails, they were just disconnected and replaced. The whole process took about 30 minutes for…

  • Some imperfections

We needed a garage fire alarm because we now have an electric car charger. The garage is dusty so we have a heat detector that goes off at 135F. Not being electricians, we had no intention of installing this thing. But it was easy to plug in a three-wire cord and plug that was cut from an old device and kept. We simply twisted the matching wires into orange nuts and then taped them in place for security. We could then simply plug the device into the ceiling outlet in the garage. The hardest…

Great Fire Protection System

One day I realized my house didn't have a fire alarm or protection so I set out to find good fire/smoke/CO2 detectors that worked well together and didn't break the bank. After a lot of searching and reading tons of reviews I decided to go with the Kidde brand and the wired version so I didn't have to worry about the batteries beeping all the time. After they walked in, I climbed up into my attic and ran 14/3 Romex wire all over the attic, firing each detector in turn from start to finish…

Easy to install, watch out for the battery

We are doing a major home renovation which will require connected smoke alarms - so far I've mostly had battery powered sensors with just one wired device (from a previous project.) I knew that I really needed some kind of sensor in the garage and boiler room but smoke detectors would be prone to false alarms so I bought two of these heat detectors. boiler room and hooked it up to several other Kidde smoke and smoke/carbon monoxide alarms that I bought at the same time. This is a simple device…

If only we had thought of that sooner!

I got a ninja home grill for Christmas because living in the Midwest in the winter can be a challenge when you want a good steak and don't want to fumble between the snow and the grill in the freezing rain. Although the grill is relatively smoke free, the smoke alarm that was installed in the kitchen when the house was built would always go off, causing my dogs to run for cover and fight over the grill. We tried many options, leaving the window open and the fan running, but it didn't work. Then

If you have a commercial oven this is for you

Most homes are usually fitted with the bare minimum of photosensitive fire alarms when built. Newer homes also have a built-in carbon monoxide detector, which has a limited lifespan and will need to be replaced more frequently. If you have a gas range in a kitchen or kitchen living area, or you frequently bake food at high heat, chances are you'll get some smoke. Individual light sensitive detectors often give false positive results. When I spoke to Kiddy, they recommended this detector for…
